Gardening

The Volunteer Gardening Team builds gardens for households throughout Davis. Our aim is to give people a stronger connection to their land and food as well as make Davis more sustainable. We feel that gardeners also interact with their neighbors more, and overall create a stronger community!

We’re localizing our food source, teaching the community about gardening and kick-starting a new favor-based economy. Although the gardening team is on a voluntary basis, some homeowners may be interested in trading the gardeners for services that they excel at such as baking, bike repair etc. We hope to facilitate this exchange of services with the Davis Dollars community currency.

You may want a garden just for the sake of a garden. Many people have also mentioned that they are interested in sharing the benefits of their gardens, and there are a number of ways you can do this, and we’ll help you make them work:

  • You can share your produce with friends and neighbors
  • You can invite friends and neighbors to help out with your garden, or share plots of your garden as a community resource
  • You can donate some of your produce, for example to the Yolo Food Bank.
  • You can make your entire garden a shared space, where multiple people work together to make it a successful project. (See the Daviswiki article onĀ FARM Davis for an example of this in action.)
